“I want to help people who don’t don’t have very much,” he told the outlet. Schwartz and his family worked with community members to gather two tons of food and collected nearly $4,000 worth of donations. “Walmart helped, and other organizations helped us get all this food–4,000 pounds of food, which is more than double what we received last year, which is amazing,” Edmond’s mother, Lily Schwartz, told local Boston-area reporters with WCVB. The food and money will go to pantries in his hometown of Mansfield and its neighboring community in Easton, Massachusetts. This marks the second time the young boy has collected food on his birthday, but he noted that this year he wanted to make it even “bigger and better.” Schwartz and his parents have started the nonprofit “Belmond’s Wish,” and he plans to continue the tradition in the years ahead. “He is dedicating every single one of his birthdays moving forward to giving back to the community,” read the description on the charity’s Facebook page. “It was just incredibly fulfilling–I know, for Belmond, and for his mom and I–just to see what we could do.
