The mother of two children—daughter Violet, 7, and son Oliver, 1—with her partner Seth, who she met through an ad for someone to make music with and they ended up falling in love writing songs together— has a unique look in that she is basically bald as a result of a childhood illness.

Why is Holly Forbes on The Voice bald?

“Around 11, I started having seizures,” she told viewers during her video package. “The doctors put me on medication that made my hair brittle and patchy. I ended up losing my hair. For a kid, it’s not easy being bald. At that time, I listened to music on repeat in my room, singing, and it just boosted my confidence.”— Holly decided to join Kelly Clarkson’s team, saying, “I grew up with you, Kelly Clarkson, so I’m going to go with her.” But later when Kelly cut her during the Knockout Rounds, both Ariana and John swooped in to steal her, and Holly joined Team Ariana. It paid off that Ariana used her only steal to try to land Holly on her team. Plus, Ariana is one Violet’s favorite singers, so Holly got to make Brownie points with her daughter! In fact, Ariana could win The Voice with Holly, who is getting a lot of love from fans of The Voice, and it is reciprocated, which she takes into consideration when preparing her songs for her performances in the Live Playoffs. “I just want to be myself and let America know what kind of artist I am,” Holly told Parade.com in an interview after performing. “We got to have a hand in picking our songs, so really what I wanted to do was to show America who I am and just try to give the best performance and to be true to myself as an artist.” That said, there is one thing that Holly hasn’t done so far on The Voice that she normally does when performing, and that accompanies herself on the piano. “When I go on tour, I plan to accompany myself a lot, play with my band and play original songs,” she said. “I really love playing piano. I am not super, super great at it, so I haven’t done it yet on the show, but I think that’s a big thing that might surprise people that haven’t known me before this show. That is something you could expect to see: original music and good atmosphere.” Whether she wins or not, the 30-year-old caregiver for patients with autism and other developmental and intellectual disabilities from Catlettsburg, Ky., says this has been the opportunity of a lifetime to make new friends, experience a sense of community, and be around people who love music as much as she does. “I am an adaptive vocalist in a way,” Holly explained. “I sometimes like to adapt different techniques that I hear, so for me, to have been able to have met so many amazing singers and creative people, not just vocalists, but amazing songwriters who have all these ideas, that is such a big thing. Even if I don’t win— there’s only going to be one winner—for me, it’s a win just networking and having so many more connections and opportunities than I came in with.” Holly is also appreciative of the people she hasn’t met but who have reached out on social media, and by voting, are helping her reach her goal of winning The Voice. “I think it is a great opportunity and the cachet goes a long way toward touring and all the stuff you can do,” she added. “I feel like it’s a good prize, especially if you might need help with recording an album. It could be a really good ladder to climb up to different places. I would love to win The Voice.” The Voice airs Monday and Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
