The actor, 39, who first began playing the famed superhero in 2013, delivered sad news to his fans on Wednesday, Dec. 14, announcing via Instagram that his days as Superman have come to a close. In his heartfelt message, Cavill revealed that the decision wasn’t his own, and instead came from DC Studios head honchos James Gunn and Peter Safran, who also confirmed the news on Wednesday.  According to a statement from Gunn, the newest Superman project will not involve Cavill, as it is expected to focus on a younger version of the iconic superhero.  “In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill,” Gunn tweeted on Wednesday. “But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”  Cavill then confirmed the outcome of his meeting with the studio heads in his Instagram post, writing, “it’s sad news, everyone.” Despite announcing that he would be reprising his role as Superman back in October, prior to the major changeups at the studio, Cavill declared on Wednesday, “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”  “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that,” he continued. “James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.” The Enola Holmes star then took a moment to thank the fans who have supported him over the years, writing, “We can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember…Superman is still around.” “Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there,” he added. “My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”  Cavill previously played Superman aka Clark Kent in 2013’s Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2017’s Justice League, 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League as well as an uncredited cameo in 2022’s Black Adam. DC Studios has not yet announced who will be playing Superman in their upcoming projects.
