The show did not explain as to why those teams left the show. But after doing some digging online, here’s what happened to The Amazing Race 33 teams that did not return. Everything We Know About The Amazing Race Season 33

Anthony Sadler and Spencer Stone — Childhood friends

Anthony and Spencer came into the race as global heroes, having stopped a terrorist attack on a train in 2015. And through the first three legs of the race, they showed themselves as a threat to take the million dollars, winning the first leg. So fans were shocked to see they did not make the return to Switzerland. Unfortunately, Anthony and Spencer weren’t able to return due to work obligations. As Spencer put it in an Instagram video released after the episode aired, “Unfortunately, Anthony was promoted in his job—which he was a financial consultant. And he was put into a higher position and ultimately they couldn’t let him—couldn’t afford to lose him for the time period that we would need to go back and finish the race.” He finished his video by putting out there that they would love to run another season if asked.

Caro Viehweg and Ray Gantt — Dating

Perhaps the most high-profile non-return was from dating couple Caro and Ray. The two had met on Love Island and found their way onto another CBS reality show, seeing each other in a whole new light. Though they got into a few tiffs during the first few legs, particularly during their struggle to drive stick shift in Scotland, they were still able to comfortably avoid elimination. Those who had been keeping track of Ray and Caro on social media would have known that they would not have been one of the teams to come back. That’s because the couple broke up in July 2020, as announced in a video on Caro’s YouTube channel. Additionally, Caro has moved to Serbia in the interim between races. And given the status of international travel, some have alleged that she may have had difficulty being able to get back onto the race, even if she and Ray were still together.

Connie Greiner and Sam Greiner — Married couple

Connie and Sam came into the race with a competitive spirit, with the latter being a high school football coach who led his team to their first championship in 60 years. They also had a heartwarming story of taking his star quarterback in to live with them, making sure he got housing, food and an education. In the months between races, Connie and Sam’s family continued to grow, which is the reason why they were unable to return. Connie was pregnant at the time the race resumed in September 2021, eventually giving birth to son Elijah in September. They showed off the new bundle of joy in a humorous Instagram video, with Sam saying, “We weren’t obviously able to finish the race, but we won more than a million dollars here.”

Taylor Green-Jones and Isaiah Green-Jones — YouTube sensations

The saddest story among the teams who weren’t able to come back comes from married couple Taylor and Isaiah. Known for their viral wedding dance video, the two took up residence in the back of the pack during the first few legs. But despite running behind, they were never truly in danger, and were ready to dance their way all the way to the final leg. Indeed, Taylor and Isaiah had actually flown out to Switzerland and were intending to restart the race. But during their mandatory quarantine period, two days after touching down in Europe, Taylor’s big brother passed away from COVID-19. As Taylor wrote on Instagram, “As you can imagine this was devastating for our family, friends and loved ones. Without question, we left the show to be back home and support our family.”

How did The Amazing Race deal with the teams who did not return?

When The Amazing Race 33 stopped filming, nine teams were left in the hunt for one million dollars. But with four active teams not coming back, the field considerably shrunk. So producers decided to do something else unprecedented for the American version. Eliminated teams Michael Norwood and Armonde “Moe” Badger and Arun and Natalia Kumar were reinstated as active teams, given a second chance at racing. Next, read our exit interview with Michael Norwood and Moe Badger, who were re-eliminated in Leg 4 of The Amazing Race 33.
