Swift made the announcement on Good Morning America Feb. 11, telling her beloved and rabid Swifties, “I’m so excited to share with you that tonight at midnight I’ll be putting out my version of my song ‘Love Story.’” Originally released in 2008, “Love Story” is largely credited with sparking Swift’s major crossover from a niche country artist to pop megastar, selling 18 million copies worldwide and peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. In early December 2020, Swift dropped a snippet of a re-recorded “Love Story” in an ad for Match.com with her pal Ryan Reynolds. She tweeted the news at the time, “Okay so while my new re-records are NOT done, my friend @VancityReynolds asked me if he could use a snippet of one for a LOLsome commercial he wrote so…here’s a sneak peak [sic] of ‘Love Story’! Working hard to get the music to you soon!!”

Why is Taylor Swift re-recording her old songs?
“Love Story” is the first track from Swift’s extensive back catalog that the singer is re-releasing in an effort to retain some ownership of her material. In July 2019, Scooter Braun bought Swift’s previous label Big Machine Records from Scott Borchetta, and the deal included the masters of Swift’s first six albums (Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989 and Reputation). She lamented at the time that the move was the “worst case scenario” for her, in part because of Braun’s associations with Justin Bieberand Kanye West. “Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it,” she wrote in a Tumblr post. “For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead, I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in.” She later revealed that she planned to re-record her first five albums beginning in November 2020, a move many credited to Kelly Clarkson for suggesting Swift do so on Twitter.
