In a recent sitdown with Variety, Outlander’s leading man was asked, “What celebrity has slipped into your DMs to say they love Outlander?” Heughan’s answer? Rita Wilson! “Rita Wilson, I think, was pretty good!” Heughan replied. “Yeah, I met her on a show.” He added, “I think [Outlander] has been very much a word-of-mouth thing, people do talk about it. It’s great, how popular it is—especially in America, it seems to be possibly more popular than other places.” Heughan didn’t divulge what Wilson said in her private message, but if you’re a mega-major Heughligan, then you probably already know which show the 41-year-old Scottish actor met her on: In 2016, both Wilson and Heughan appeared on The Late Late Show With James Corden. Country star Luke Bryan also had a seat on Corden’s couch for that episode, prompting Corden to ask a blushing Wilson, “Are you happy to be surrounded by such man candy here?” Wilson responded by telling the origin story of her Outlander obsession. “I have a girls’ group, a girls friends group, and we travel together once a year to hang out,” she explained. “One year, we were in a tropical place and Outlander was the series of choice. So let me just say, there was a lot of time spent in dark rooms watching the series Outlander and when I told the girls that I was gonna be on the couch with you—ooh! that sounds almost something…” As an embarrassed Wilson hid her head in her hands, Bryan hilariously warned her, “Gotta get Tom on the phone”—referring, of course, to her longtime husband, Tom Hanks. Meanwhile, Heughan seemed ready to shoot his shot with Wilson, telling the studio audience, “Talk amongst yourselves.” Of course, Wilson isn’t the only leading lady married to a major Hollywood star who happens to love Outlander above all else (except, let’s assume, their other halves!).
