On March 8, 2022, series creator Mindy Kaling revealed on Twitter that the Netflix series’ third season will premiere sometime in the summer of 2022—and now we know exactly when it is, plus more details. In May 2022, it was announced that Season 3 will bow on Aug. 12, 2022. Kaling also revealed in the same tweet that the show has already renewed for a fourth season (yay!), which will also serve as its final (aww!) season. Her tweet represents the biggest news to come out about Never Have I Ever Season 3 since Jan. 20, 2022, when Deadline reported that actor Anirudh Pisharody, best known for portraying Ravi Panikkar on FOX’s 9-1-1, had nabbed a recurring Season 3 role as Des, described by the outlet as “an Indian American teen who’s as smart as Devi but goes to an elite private school.” What else do we know so far about Never Have I Ever Season 3? Is the Never Have I Ever series 18+?
Never Have I Ever is rated TV-14, but Fisher hinted that a potential Season 3 may see some racier scenes, all for the sake of comedy. “The biggest [question for Season 3] is what’s Devi going to be as an actual girlfriend in a real relationship with someone who’s much more experienced than she is? This has been her dream for the entire series,” Fisher told Entertainment Tonight. “Day 1 she’s like, ‘We’ve got to get boyfriends.’ That’s all she’s wanted. And now she has one and he is the most popular boy in the school. And it’s like, ‘What is that going to be like?’ Is it going to be the dream that she had always imagined it would be or will it be more complicated? And probably it will be more complicated than that. There’s still these things like to explore in terms of sex and what do you do if you’re a nerd who’s done very little and you’re dating a much more experienced guy.”
What happens in Never Have I Ever Season 3?
So far, plot details are scant. However, Darren Barnet hinted that a potential third season could examine Devi’s relationship with Paxton. “It’s gonna be interesting seeing how he handles being in a relationship — or not," he told Variety. And how he handles doing things very much against the grain in terms of the social expectations, and what people have always expected of Paxton. He’s in very different shoes.” Fisher explained to The Hollywood Reporter that even though it appeared that Devi chose Paxton in Season 2, there would always be drama in her romantic life. “I don’t know how long it will go," she said of the show. “I’m happy to work on it as long as they’ll pay me. I love making it. I do think [Devi’s] got very different relationships with these two guys and you could see her going in either direction. So much of it depends on what the rest of the stories are that we want to tell. With teen shows, everyone is 45 and you have to graduate from high school. I do think the love triangle will be significant for the run of the show.” Fisher also told Entertainment Tonight that we’ll see more subplots with Devi’s family members in Season 3. Ramakrishnan said of a potential third season, “It’ll be really cool to see Devi in a proper relationship because we technically never really have. It was a two-timing situation, and as Dr. Ryan and Eleanor say, ‘That doesn’t count.’ That’s not real. She has zero boyfriends. So it is going to be cool to see her as a girlfriend—that new relationship in her life that she’s never had before. But I think Paxton realizing what Devi means to him is really nice because he realizes, ‘This is the person that believes in me and doesn’t think I’m stupid. And I actually accomplished something, and she was there for me,’” she added. “I think it’s Paxton setting aside the ego and the pride and also offering forgiveness and being like, ‘This is the situation.’ It’s really heartwarming.” Next, check out the 100 best TV shows to binge-watch on Netflix right now!
