While taking a walk through the past, he revealed that the dynamic dance scene that ends the original Footloose almost didn’t exist. Instead, after Bacon shouts, “Let’s dance!” the film was meant to fade to black. “I run into the place, I say, ‘Let’s dance!’ and there’s like a moment of dancing, and then right away, it goes into slow motion,” he says of the original ending. “There’s glitter falling from the sky, and everyone is just moving in slow motion. This was the original ending,” Bacon explained. Unsurprisingly, that didn’t really do it for test audiences. “The studio tested the movie, and they were like, ‘This doesn’t work at all,’” he added. “Everyone wants to get up and dance at the end of this movie.” The dance scene wasn’t just ready to swap in as an alternate ending, though. Bacon said that it was almost a year after wrapping production on the film that the cast and crew came back together to create the final celebratory dance sequence. Of course, they kept the original “Let’s dance!” with Bacon running down the stairs. “But from that point on, it was choreographed and L.A. dancers were hired. Chris Penn was out there — and me and Lori [Singer]. We had to gather the cast together and try to get the hair to match. That was a completely re-shot ending.” Thankfully they were able to work it into everyone’s schedules—could you imagine if they’d never made the edit? More Pop Culture:
