A logline has yet to be released, but according to Deadline, the “story is based on Krasinski’s original idea about a child’s journey to rediscover their imagination.”  The Hollywood Reporter announced back in 2019 that Reynolds and Krasinski were teaming up for a movie, then-titled Imaginary Friends, that would tell the “tale of a man who can see and talk to people’s imaginary friends, befriending those that have been forgotten or discarded. However, some imaginary friends, lacking love and friendship, turn to the dark side, and it’s up to Reynolds’ character to save the world from those that become evil.”

Although PEOPLE reported in 2021 that Imaginary Friends would go “into production next summer,” so summer 2022. “Well, I haven’t started working on the film with him yet, but I can’t wait,” Carell told Entertainment Tonight in June 2022. “I’m anticipating just joy and fun. I mean, he’s the best, and he’s a great director. “I’ll put him through his paces, you know? I’ll make him work for it. I might be one of those persnickety actors that doesn’t always agree, or won’t come out of my trailer,” Carell quipped. “You think you hired somebody that is a friend, but you got that wrong!” One of the stars of Imaginary Friends, Reynolds—who is also producing the film via his company Maximum Effort—revealed in October 2021 that he was taking “a little sabbatical from movie making.” It’s unclear if Imaginary Friends will be the actor’s first movie post-break.
