Dr. Oz announced on Nov. 30, 2021, that he is running for Senate in his home state of Pennsylvania as part of the Republican primary. As a result of Federal Communication Commission (FCC) rules about “equal time” for candidates on the airwaves, which requires equal airtime for political rivals in a given district, state, or area, The Dr. Oz Show was removed from affiliate TV stations in Philadelphia TV markets, as well as other Pennsylvania networks. Networks in the neighboring state of New York, some of which air in Pennsylvania as well, have also pulled the show. Some Cleveland, Ohio, networks also removed The Dr. Oz Show because their signals are sometimes picked up in western Pennsylvania. Zack Hernandez, senior vice president and general sales manager, U.S. syndication sales, Sony Pictures Television, said in a statement, “Audiences have been loving what Daphne, Gail and Jamika have been serving up during their weekly segments on The Dr. Oz Show for years. We have long believed The Good Dish would make an excellent stand-alone series and are delighted to be able to deliver this fresh take on the cooking genre to our station partners and their viewers across the country.”

The Dr. Oz Show was actually renewed for two more seasons through 2023, according to Deadline, before the decision to end the series in January 2022 was announced. That said, there may be some confusion since the show already isn’t airing in several major markets—and even the doctor himself has implied that he, as an individual, was canceled by The Philadelphia Inquirer, after the newspaper revealed that they would no longer refer to him as “Dr. Oz.” “Last week The Philadelphia Inquirer had me on their front page as ‘Dr. Oz.’ This morning they just announced, no more doctor, even though I’m a practicing physician,” Dr. Oz said in a Twitter video. “I’m taking care of patients. I’ve done thousands of heart surgeries. They don’t want to call me ‘doctor’ anymore. I won’t be canceled.” However, this was merely a misunderstanding. Grammarian and columnist Jeffrey Barg explained in an essay, “The day after Oz announced his candidacy, the Inquirer’s front-page headline, photo caption, and first sentence all referred to ‘Dr. Oz.’ That goes against the paper’s style guide, which reads: ‘Do not use Dr. on first reference for anyone with the title, whether they are a medical doctor or have a doctorate in a nonmedical field, to avoid complaints of unequal treatment from individuals who worked hard to achieve doctorates in nonmedical fields.’ It specifies just two exceptions: obituaries, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” Barg continued, “After the Inquirer ran ‘Dr.’ in its headline, the paper’s style committee determined that doing so was the wrong call. After all, Val Arkoosh, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, is also both a medical doctor and a celebrity (of sorts, as Montgomery County commissioner, albeit not the one who drew protesters to his home for calling Black Lives Matter a hate group), and yet the paper doesn’t refer to her as ‘Dr. Arkoosh’ in headlines. Going forward, the Inquirer determined that it will refer to all candidates in the same way, which means that while Oz may be referenced as a celebrity doctor, ‘Dr. Oz’ will be limited to mentions of his TV show…which is now off the air in Philly.”
