Photos posted to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s official Instagram account showed Kate taking a boat ride on Lake Windermere with several of the ‘Windermere Children’, which refers to a group of 300 Holocaust survivors who came to the Lake District as children in order to recover from the trauma of the Nazi concentration camps. In a caption, Kate wrote, “I wanted to be able to meet some of the survivors Ike and Arek in person to hear their stories; about how they went on to create their own companies, write a book and to this day, still sneak in the odd round of golf. “It was so powerful to hear how their time in the Lakes enjoying outdoor recreation, sport and art therapy, allowed them to be able to begin to rebuild their lives and eventually, their families here in the UK.” k It was a gloriously sunny day for a boat trip, with Kate wearing country-appropriate attire in the form of a belted tweed blazer, jeggings and brown leather hiking boots. Earlier in the day she also met with RAF Air Cadets for some mountain biking and abseiling! Kensington Palace said the duchess “passionately believes that spending time outdoors plays a pivotal role in children and young people’s future health and happiness, building foundations that last over a lifetime by encouraging active exploration and the opportunity to form and strengthen positive relationships.” Duchess Kate was pictured at the event in a puffy olive green jacket with her hair falling in loose waves around her shoulders (it looks like she’s gotten blond highlights again.) Her day of engagements in Cumbria marks only her second appearance in public after a 66 day absence between her attendance at the final day of Wimbledon on July 11 and her reappearance at an RAF air base on September 18.
