Her hair and makeup were definite signs that the Duchess of Cambridge is experimenting with a fresher look than we’ve seen previous years, but the shimmering green gown she wore was one that we’ve seen previously. The Jenny Packham gown, almost entirely covered in emerald sequins and crystals, was previously worn by Kate to a black-tie diplomatic reception during her andPrince William’s tour of Pakistan in 2019. Such a dazzling dress calls for simple accessories, and thankfully Kate realised this—her only jewelry was a pair of gold earrings by Missoma. Meanwhile Prince William wore a tuxedo of midnight blue velvet. The event marked 100 years of monarchical patronage towards the Royal Variety Charity (the annual show raises funds for British entertainers who have become old or ill.) In 1921 King George V became patron of the charity, a role that would eventually pass to his daughterQueen Elizabeth II. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were seen applauding the performances from their perch in the royal box inside the Royal Albert Hall. This was their first red carpet event since the Earthshot Awards in October, at which the couple looked a tad mismatched by dressing for entirely different seasons. Kate wore a floaty lilac gown while William paired a black turtleneck with a dark green velvet suit (seems like we can expect to see more velvet from the prince going forwards!)
