The retro, romance-minded show aims to help contestants meet their future soulmates by asking their three potential matches a series of revealing questions… or at least, it aims to deliver a few laughs while entertaining you with the ups and down of other people’s dating foibles. But what’s not revealed? What they look like, as they famously get to know one another while separated by a partition onstage. If this sounds like your kind of reality show, keep reading to find out everything you need to know about Celebrity Dating Game.

What is Celebrity Dating Game?

In ABC’s DatingGame franchise, which dates all the way back to 1965, contestants choose a lucky suitor from a hidden panel of singles; after the show, the newly matched couple purportedly goes out on a date with all expenses paid for by the show. This new version, of course, ups the ante by lining up famous stars as contestants. Zooey Deschanel, who will host Celebrity Dating Game alongside Michael Bolton, recently told Parade.com that the new version “functions like the old Dating Game in that someone is picking a person to go on a date with, but contestants are also trying to guess who the celebrity is. Michael sings clues about who the celebrity is… You have one celebrity per episode, so the clues make it a little bit more obvious than The Masked Singer. Sometimes the people have a really hard time guessing who it is. No matter how famous they are, it doesn’t really matter, sometimes the clues just don’t tap into what they know about the person. But it’s really fun to see whether people are able to guess who it is or not.”
