When will Brand New Cherry Flavor be released?

On Friday the 13th, of course! All episodes from the first season of Brand New Cherry Flavor will be available to stream on Netflix starting Friday, August 13, 2021.

What is Brand New Cherry Flavor about?

At first, Brand New Cherry Flavor seems to be about an aspiring filmmaker with big hopes and dreams. In 1990, Lisa N. Nova (played by Rosa Salazar) heads to California, hoping to meet with Leo Burke (Eric Lange), a semi-washed up, Oscar-winning director, about her short film, Lucy’s Eyes. He betrays her, and that’s when she encounters a strange woman with a penchant for kittens named Boro (Catherine Keener). From there, according to the series’ official description on Netflix, Nova tumbles down “a hallucinatory rabbit hole of sex, magic, revenge—and kittens.”

Is Brand New Cherry Flavor based on a book?

Yep! The series is inspired by Brand New Cherry Flavor: A Novel of the Occultby Todd Grimson. While the book was first published in 1996, series co-creator Nick Antosca read it in 2008 or 2009, then sent it to producing partner Lenore Zion around 2016. Antosca recently told ScreenRant about his reaction to Grimson’s tome, “I was kind of stunned by its really unique blend of genres, satire, and a great lead character." How much of the book is in the series? “We kind of mixed and matched,” Antosca explained to iHorror.com. “We took the stuff that Todd created… We sent him the scripts as we worked. He was involved in the creative process. Then we brought some of our own stuff to it. I mean, like, the kittens were not in the book. That was Lenore’s idea. We just kind of fell in love with it.”

Who is in the cast of Brand New Cherry Flavor?

Some of the cast members include:

Rosa Salazar as Lisa Nova

Salazar, 36, has appeared in numerous films and TV shows, most notably as the star of James Cameron’s Alita: Battle Angel. She has also appeared in American Horror Story: Murder House and NBC’s Parenthood. Antosca told ScreenRant he and Zion wanted to cast Salazar because they were so impressed with her past work. “We had seen her in small roles… so we felt like she would bring some of that intensity and powerful, creative energy we needed for Lisa Nova,” he explained.

Catherine Keener as Boro

The ever-likable Keener, 62, plays Boro, Lisa’s mystical, mysterious and dark fairy godmother of sorts. Plus, Boro really likes kittens. Keener has been seen in films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Get Out, and Being John Malkovich. “Catherine [Keener] is electric on screen,” Zion said in an interview about the show. “She has that thing. She’s got such a unique and skillful delivery of dryness and…there’s nobody who delivers emotion in quite such a unique way as Catherine."

Eric Lange as Lou Burke

Lange has appeared in shows like Escape at Dannemora, Narcos and Lost. He plays the director who’s the object of Lisa’s revenge. “[Lange’s] got charisma, and there’s something about him that makes you want to see his perspective. And so, it felt like casting against type. We needed Lou to be a human, and to have a sympathetic experience,” said Zion.

Manny Jacinto as Code

Jacinto is best known for his role as Jason Mendoza on The Good Place. Here, he plays Code, a friend of Lisa’s, who is increasingly surprised at her behavior.

Jeff Ward as Roy Hardaway

Ward is best known as Deke on Agents of Shield. He plays Roy, who gets entangled in a “push-pull dynamic with Lisa," as Zion puts it. “There’s a sweetness to the way [Ward] plays Roy that I think we found really refreshing and unexpected.”

Hannah Levien as Christine

Levien has appeared in shows like The Magicians and Supernatural. Not much is known about her character in Brand New Cherry Flavor.

Are there spoilers for Season 1 of Brand New Cherry Flavor?

The show’s creators haven’t said much about the details of Lisa’s revenge plot or how her own life starts to fall apart as a result of the plans she has for Lou. However, if you’re aching to find out what happens, Grimson’s novel can give you an idea of where the show will go.

Is there a trailer for Season 1 of Brand New Cherry Flavor?

You’re in luck: there’s both a teaser and a full trailer for the show! The teaser, released on July 19, features the song “Bloodletting” by Concrete Blonde and showcases Boro and Lisa’s first meeting—and lots of kittens. The longer trailer, meanwhile, fleshes out the story a little bit, with someone asking, “Are you sure you’re the hero of this story?” as Donovan’s “Season of the Witch” plays. Both the teaser and the trailer are filled with the kind of quick jump shots and weird imagery that seem right for this kind of horror story.

Will there be more seasons of Brand New Cherry Flavor ?

It’s unlikely; Netflix is billing the show as a limited series. That probably means that Seasons 1’s eight episodes are made to tell a complete story. But is there a chance for another season or more? Yes, especially since the book goes on beyond where the show ends—although that’s not the plan at this time. “We planned it as a contained story,” said Antosca. “Never say never if all the stars align, but… we took elements of what Todd created to tell a contained story."

Where was Brand New Cherry Flavor filmed?

Most of the principal photography for the show was done in Vancouver, Canada. Filming took place between November 25 and March 2 all the way back in 2019!
