What’s Big Sky about?
Big Sky is a crime thriller/murder mystery that takes place in the small town of Big Sky, Montana. The series follows two private detectives, Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury) and Cody Hoyt (Ryan Phillippe) who join forces with ex-cop and Hoyt’s astranged wife, Jenny (Katheryn Winnick), in search of two sisters who have been kidnapped by a truck driver on a remote highway in Montana. When they discover that these are not the only girls who have disappeared in the area, they must race against the clock to stop the killer before another woman is taken.
Is Big Sky based on a book?
Yes! The series is based on the 2013 book, The Highway by C.J. Box. Other books featuring PI Cody Hoyt follow in the series by Box. Box also authored the popular Joe Pickett series of novels.
Who created Big Sky?
David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, Big Little Lies, Picket Fences, Boston Legal, Goliath, Mr. Mercedes) created Big Sky, after reading Box’s book The Highway. Kelley has received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards for various series he has created over the years.
Who are the new Big Sky characters?
Big Sky is full of surprises! We’ve just learned that a new family will be introduced later in season 1. We’ll soon get to know the Kleinasse family, a powerful ranching family in the area. Horst, played by Ted Levine (The Silence of the Lambs) is the patriarch that reigns over his land with his wife Margaret, played by Michelle Forbes (Berlin Station, Treadstone). Michael Raymond-James (True Blood, Billions), Ryan Dorsey (Justified, Ray Donovan) and Kyle Schmid (Six, Being Human) will play their three sons—Blake, Rand and John Wayne, respectively. Britt Robertson (Life Unexpected, Girlboss) plays Cheyenne, the sole daughter in the Kleinasse clan. Also joining the cast is Omar Metwally (The Affair, Treadstone). He’ll play Deputy U.S. Marshal Frank Lindor.
Who’s in the cast of Big Sky?
Ryan Phillippe (as Cody Hoyt)
Hoyt is a private detective who is searching for two sisters who have gone missing while on a road trip in Montana. Along with his partner (Bunbury) and estranged wife and ex-cop (Winnick), the trio must find a killer before he strikes again. Phillippe comes full circle at ABC with his role of Cody Hoyt on Big Sky. His first acting job was on ABC’s One Life to Live. Where you’ve seen him before:Cruel Intentions, Crimson Tide, I Know What You Did Last Summer Fun fact: Phillippe was given an Advocate for Justice award in 2016 for his work with the Innocence Project.
Katheryn Winnick (as Jenny Hoyt)
Jenny is Cody’s estranged wife and an ex-cop. She comes to blows over Cassie’s developing relationship with Cody but must work together with the private detectives if they hope to find and rescue the missing girls. Where you’ve seen her before: Wu Assassins, Vikings Fun fact:Winnick did all her own stunts on Wu Assassins.
Kylie Bunbury (as Cassie Dewell)
Cassie is Hoyt’s partner at the detective agency and current paramour. She’s a single mom with a young son. Where you’ve seen her before:When They See Us, Pitch (where she played the first female pitcher in Major League Baseball).
Brian Geraghty (as Ronald Pergman)
Ronald is a 30-something solitary long-haul truck driver who still lives with his mother. You may recognize him from Chicago PD.
Dedee Pfieffer (as Denise Brisbane)
Denise is the receptionist at Hoyt’s detective agency. Fun Fact: Dedee’s sister is none other than Michelle Pfeiffer. Dedee is the sister-in-law of the show’s creator, David E. Kelley, who is married to Pfeiffer.
Valarie Mahaffey (as Helen Pergman)
Helen Pergman is Ronald’s overbearing mother. This isn’t Mahaffey’s first rodeo with Kelley. She’s appeared on Ally McBeal, Private Practice and Boston Legal. Where you’ve seen her before: Fraiser, Young Sheldon, Dead to Me
Natalie Alyn Lind (as Danielle Sullivan)
Danielle is on a road trip to see her boyfriend and brings her sister along. A road rage incident and traffic on the main highway lead her and her sister down a treacherous path. Fun fact: Lind is from a show biz family. Her father, John Lind, is a producer and her mother, Barbara Alyn Lind is an actress. Her two younger sisters are also actresses.
Jade Pettyjohn as (Grace Sullivan)
Danielle’s younger sister is excited to be able to join her big sis on a road trip. She’s the more level-headed of the two. Where you’ve seen her before:Little Fires Everywhere, Grimm.
Jesse James Keitel (as Jerrie)
Jerrie is a gender-fluid artist with big dreams. Their relationship with a kidnapping suspect takes a wild turn when they find themselves in a precarious situation as the story unfolds. Keitel is a nonbinary actor and the only nonbinary series regular that has starred in a series on primetime television. Where you’ve seen them before:Younger, Alex Strangelove.
John Carroll Lynch (as Rick Legarski)
Character actor Lynch plays Legarski, a Montana state trooper. Where you’ve seen him before: Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Drew Carey Show. Fun fact: Lynch’s first role was in the film, Grumpy Old Men.
